INDIE-NEGEV 2011

Things get bigger. One tiny step at a time. Yet there are always key events you find yourself anxiously waiting for.

Things that signal you and everyone around you that something has really evolved here, that there is a real leap forward here. And it is nice to feel each step of the way, especially since they happen in the real way, from the bottom up, driven by daily hard work.

It has been clear to everyone for a long time now that it is not just about creating and making music. As artists, we are required to meet so many definitions and excel in so many fields in parallel, in order to have even the slightest chance of fulfilling even just a fraction of our huge dream.

I guess all of that comes down to the word “perception” or.. maybe.. “understanding”? A “correct” perception/understanding of everything.. in all aspects of what is happening.. in the world.. today.
 Musically, visually, genre-wise, concept-wise.
To disassemble and re-assemble everything.

To always be alert, to look all around and allow yourself to acquire, absorb and learn from what happens around and what becomes successful. To understand why those things work, what makes them work. And then to try and translate that to our own world.. into our own music, our own visual style and own attitude. Everything.

And always remember to make good music too J
of course. Quite important. But I won’t touch that this time.. as it feels a little corny to me, and obvious to write about.

If we get back to the key events I mentioned earlier, so.. one of those key events this year was performing with Lorena at the In-D-Negev festival. Of course, we had other very significant events like big shows in festivals abroad, communication with European labels and other exciting things that happen, but this show was definitely something we were really looking forward to – amazing audience that arrive and only wish to receive and to enjoy quality music, people looking for something unique and fresh.

Unfortunately, I was hospitalized due to a severe kidney infection which canceled our show there. I couldn’t be more disappointed. Why must it happen now...............

But then, a friend who came to visit me in the hospital pointed out that gradually, we do more and more things, we have more and more important events, and statistically – unexpected things always happen (illness,  etc.) so we can look at it a little differently, and be excited from the multitude of things we have going-on and it is amazing to suddenly realize how many of those we actually have. So, unexpected things will always mess something up. But we should look forward and focus on the next thing already.
And the next thing suddenly looks closer than ever

A Connection

People often ask me why we do our music in English, why we operate in Tel Aviv while we’re originally from Jerusalem and how did Jerusalem affect our music and our growing up process in general.

Once, not so long ago, before the internet and the communication evolution that attacked us from every corner, musicians and listeners were limited with the music they’d consume, as it was filtered by many – from labels to music editors.

Today in 2011, the music market is one large global village where everyone has access to all music types – whether it is mega hits or avant-garde indie music.

I feel lucky for being born in Jerusalem. I think its peacefulness and the fact I had less external stimuli as a child had a lot of influence on how I experience music and art in general.

During our UK tour about a month ago, one of the compliments we kept hearing a lot was that we sound different. And although our music is supposedly very British in its style, the fact we’re from Israel still makes us sound and behave differently. I don’t think it is possible to separate the artist from where he/she was raised. The smells, sounds and views that escorted us during our childhood stay an inseparable part of our creation.

The main reason we operate in Tel Aviv and aim abroad is logistic and practical.

Wherever we make our music, “Jerusalem” will always stay in our veins.

Ilan.

Doing it all by yourself

There is a constant debate about the term indie music. Some say it's a music genre that describes modern alternative music.

Others say it’s just independent music, Which means that everything from the recordings, mixing, publishing etc is made by the artist him self/ with out the help of a record label or any other outside source.

This is how we do things in Lorena b; we do everything by ourselves and from our own pocket.

With all the difficulties that come with it, economical and emotional I believe that this way we keep the album as close as we can to our own artistically vision and taste.

Our debut album will be released on the 30.4 at Tmuna Theater

Followed with a short tour at the UK

Whether the album will be successful? This is for the listeners to decide.

I know for sure that we as a band are certain that this album is special and is made with our own tools and resources only

in my opinion, thats what indie music is all about :)

Cheers
